It seemed like a joyful, low-pressure event, until something happened that gave me a lot to reflect on.

All the children at this party go to a “free play” school, the kind that emphasizes autonomy and non-coercive learning. I’ve always appreciated the concept of children learning through curiosity, guided by their natural interests, unburdened by rigid systems. But I’ve also carried quiet skepticism in what I have seen. Sometimes what’s labeled “freedom” can begin to look more like anarchy.

That day, the line between the two became sharply visible.

The clown, whom we’ve seen perform before with great success, tried several times to gather the children to start his show. His efforts were ignored. After a few more attempts, including urging the parents to help rally the kids, the show finally began, but the atmosphere never really shifted. The children wouldn’t sit down. They weren’t just distracted or restless, they were openly defiant.

A pair of siblings, in particular, began to heckle the clown, mocking him and disrupting his rhythm. Other children began to follow their lead. At one point, the clown asked the brother to be quiet and the sister escalated to threatening him. I watched, stunned, as their parents and teachers looked on silently. Even the teacher whose child’s birthday it was said and did nothing.

Only toward the end, maybe fifteen minutes before the show was supposed to finish, did the father of the disruptive children step in and say, “That’s enough.” But by then, the damage was done. The show was a shadow of what it could have been, and the energy of the party had turned strange and sour. Most were looking for their escape, myself included.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://www.sapiyuq.com/contact/","text":"Begin Your Healing Here

Freedom Without Boundaries Isn't Freedom

What unsettled me most wasn’t just that the show failed. It was the absence of structure, of respect, of boundaries all in the name of freedom.

I believe in letting children explore. I believe in giving them space to express themselves, make choices, and fall down. But what I witnessed wasn’t freedom, it was a vacuum of authority, where no one felt empowered to step in, even when kindness and mutual respect were clearly missing.

Afterward, I spoke with my own child about what had happened. We remembered how fun the clown’s show had been in other settings. I asked her:

“What happens if we try to play soccer, but everyone makes up their own rules?”
“What if we play a board game, and no one agrees how it’s played?”

She got it. Because even children know that freedom depends on shared structure, some form of cooperation makes things possible.

Are We Teaching Resilience, or Rebellion at Any Cost?

There’s another layer to this. Had that clown been a predator, these children’s refusal to follow adult direction might’ve been seen as a good thing. They’re not blindly obedient, but what I witnessed wasn’t discernment. It was blanket opposition to any external input, even benign and joyful ones.

That’s not protection. That’s a kind of wild resistance that leaves children without tools to participate in community or to enjoy shared experiences.

So yes, I’m a little worried. Not about free play, but about how many parents are embracing “no discipline” as if it’s the same as conscious parenting. There’s a middle ground between authoritarian control and unanchored chaos. A space where children can be sovereign and respectful. Where adults can offer guidance without domination.

Because if we don’t teach our children how to sit, listen, share joy, or recognize when someone is genuinely offering connection…

What are we really teaching them?

Rooted & Radiant is a reader-supported publication. Parasite

Giardia is a parasite that can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea, often referred to as “traveler’s diarrhea.” It’s one of the most common waterborne parasites found in Peru.

In many countries, water treatment plants remove Giardia from public water supplies using chemicals like chlorine and ozone, which can effectively kill or neutralize Giardia cysts. However, in Peru, Giardia cysts are not as easily filtered out. In fact, untreated or poorly treated water often contains Giardia that remains active and contagious. This is why travelers often find themselves facing the discomfort of parasites after drinking unfiltered water or eating food that has been contaminated with this parasite.

Why Does Giardia Live in the Water in Peru?

In Peru and many other developing countries, water sanitation practices can vary. While large cities like Lima may have water treatment facilities, many smaller towns or rural areas still rely on water sources that may not be filtered effectively. The water infrastructure in these regions can also be outdated, which increases the chance of contamination.

Giardia is resilient it can live in cold, clear mountain streams and even dirty puddles, which are often sources of drinking water in Peru. It’s especially prevalent in rainy seasons, when water runoff increases contamination risk.

How Giardia Is Treated in Other Countries

In countries with more advanced water treatment systems, Giardia cysts are typically killed in the water treatment plants through the use of chlorine, ozone, and UV light. These chemicals and methods have been found to be highly effective at neutralizing parasites like Giardia, ensuring that the water is safe for consumption.

In addition to water treatments, antiparasitic medications like metronidazole and tinidazole are commonly prescribed to treat Giardia infections in many developed countries. These medications kill the parasite in the intestines, helping the body clear it out.

Preventing Giardia While Traveling in Peru

While Giardia is common, it is preventable. Here are some tips for keeping yourself protected from parasites during your travels:

1. Drink Bottled Water or Boil Water

Avoid tap water, even in hotels or restaurants. Stick to

2. Avoid Ice

Ice is often made from local tap water, which may contain Giardia. Stick to drinks without ice or order

3. Wash Hands and Fruits Thoroughly

Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating. If you’re consuming fruits or vegetables, make sure they are

4. Avoid Undercooked Meat and Seafood

Meat and seafood can also be sources of parasites.

Parasites Aren’t Just in Peru, They’re Everywhere

It’s easy to assume that parasites are a foreign problem, but the truth is that every country has its own set of parasites. You may not hear as much about them in your home country, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In fact, Giardia and other parasites are found in many developed countries, though we may not always be aware of them.

For example, the United States, Canada, and Europe all report cases of Giardia infections, especially through contaminated water, unpasteurized dairy, or raw meat. In fact, parasites like tapeworms and Toxoplasma (found in undercooked meats) are commonly transmitted worldwide, even in the most sanitary places.

Parasites in Meat and Seafood

In both Peru and your home country, meat and seafood can be potential sources of parasites. Tapeworms, roundworms, and flukes are some of the most common parasitic infections from consuming undercooked or raw meat. Raw seafood (like sushi) can carry parasites such as Anisakis.

When traveling abroad, especially in places with less stringent food safety regulations, be extra cautious about undercooked meat or seafood, as these can harbor harmful pathogens and parasites. Cooking meat and seafood thoroughly kills these parasites, reducing your risk.

Let’s Map Your Healing Together

Final Thoughts

Parasites, like Giardia, can be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but they don’t have to ruin your trip or health. By taking precautions with food and water, staying mindful of hygiene, and understanding the risks, you can protect yourself from unwanted parasites while traveling in Peru or anywhere else.

And remember, your home country may have parasites lurking in its food and water sources too. immediately clear it (which depends on gut terrain, immune strength, and bile flow), a few things can unfold:

The eggs or larvae can hatch, especially if they find favorable conditions in the intestines.

The organism could develop into a small roundworm, fruit fly maggot, or a nematode many of which are harmless in plants, but can become opportunistic in a human host.

Some can migrate into tissues, or live quietly in the gut, contributing to vague symptoms: bloating, fatigue, skin flare-ups, food sensitivities, even shifts in mood or sleep.

The truth is:

Most parasite exposures are invisible.
You won’t always see the worm. You won’t taste the eggs. And many foods even or especially organic fruit carry microscopic hitchhikers.

This isn’t to cause fear. It’s to remind us:
Parasites don’t just come from “dirty” food. They come from life itself.

Today I saw the worm. I threw it away.
But what about all the days I don’t see it?

When I was living in the Amazon jungle for many months, the locals were eating fruit straight from a guanabana tree. Before taking a bite, I inspected mine and sure enough, there were worms. This was before “worms” became a thing for me.

Every fruit they brought me had worms. Concerned, I went to my teacher and said, “I can’t eat these, they have worms.” She looked at me calmly, sighed and replied, “I know. We eat them. Cleaning time is coming soon, so it doesn’t matter.”

Well… okay, I thought. Truthfully, it was too much for me to process at the time.

I could not eat them, but that moment lit another spark in my journey an early glimpse into the natural cycles of life, death, and renewal.

If you suspect worms may have quietly slipped past your gaze and you’re ready to begin the work of clearing and renewal, this is your invitation. Healing begins the moment we choose to look.

Journey With A Guide Who Is Well Versed In Parasites.

Buy The Book Here To Begin Your Journey.

Rooted & Radiant is a reader-supported publication.
